Not a fan of Nora Ephron? Well, she hasn’t exactly been knocking them out of the park, lately. What with Bewitched and some fairly weak romantic comedies, it seems like she’s just fallen into a habit of trying to repeat the success of When Harry Met Sally by simply ripping herself off. However, there was a time when Ephron was still willing to push the boundaries of what she was capable of as a writer and create new films, not tired rehashes. My Blue Heaven is one of her best. Give it a try next time you want to download movies.

The film stars Steve Martin as an Italian gangster who’s just entered the witness protection program, and Rick Moranis as the FBI agent assigned to handle his case. Martin moves into a small town and, yes, it’s another, typical fish out of water story, but it’s well done, and when it’s an old story, what matters is that it’s well done.

Of course, what it REALLY comes down to is if the movie is funny, and this one is. Even the material that shouldn’t be all that funny, it actually works because of how skilled Martin and Moranis are at this sort of banter. The whole movie is full of great laughs and, at the very least, some good chuckles. This standard odd couple relationship, like the fish out of water plot, is made fresh and new by the cast and approach to the material.

Martin quickly takes over the entire small town after meeting up with some fellow protected witnesses. You’d think it might get unpleasant watching a bunch of truck hijackings and robberies in the middle of a light hearted comedy, but they actually manage to make it sort of cute and innocent. It doesn’t feel like mafia stuff, it feels like a grown up version of the Little Rascals getting into mischief.

Interestingly, while the movie does get into some violent subject matter, it never really “gets ugly”. The violence always winds up being funny rather than frightening, which is nice, since it can be difficult to film violence in a comedy just right so as not to disturb the audience. No matter how gritty it gets, though, the movie stays funny against all odds.

Another big source of laughs is in watching Martin effortlessly juggle his two girlfriends and wife. Somehow, these three women never find out about each other, and there’s a suspicion that, if they did, he would find a way to talk his way out of it, like always. Martin’s character is a crook, but such a likable, friendly crook, he could steal your wallet and your heart at the same time.

The movie has a great, dreamy look to it, with focus on blue skies and green pastures. This captures that quaint, American landscape that the film is all about, providing a sharp contrast to the gritty, urban environment that Martin’s character grew up at the heart of.

It may or may not be one of the greatest films of all time or anything like that, but it’s very funny, Martin and Moranis are in top form, and Ephron proves once more that, when she has a fun idea, she can still write a great comedy film, even if she doesn’t always feel like it.
