As time goes on, drains and sewers can deteriorate leading to possible structural problems. The cause for this deterioration can be a variety of different reasons from ground movement, root intrusions or simply poor construction. Whatever the reason for the problem, it cannot harm you by knowing what is going on under your property. CCTV is one way to be sure that you know what problems that you may have to face
The simple fact is that you cannot tell from above ground exactly what is going on with a drain that is underground. You need to know exactly what is going on- where the blockage is happening for example, so the best solution can be found. Blockages can be from many causes, organic or otherwise, they need to be removed and quickly so that problems don’t worsen
CCTV is a way of solving this problem. CCTV or closed circuit television means that you can see inside the pipe and diagnose the exact problem. There are two types of CCTV system available, the crawler and the push rod systems. The physical and technical specifications and differences in these two systems should not bother you- just rest assured that they will find and solve the problems that you don’t yet know about
The crawler system is used for drainage pipes over 150mm in diameter. Smaller drainage systems (less than 150mm) are diagnosed using the push rod system. Full, detailed reports are then compiled to show exactly what is wrong with the drain so you can then decide what is the best method of solving the drainage problem
When using CCTV, there are several problems that an experienced operator can pick up. Collapsed pipes can look very similar to blockages. Tree root intrusion can also be picked up on the screen but the thing that all have in common. Surveys are then written up following assessment and they are then burned on to DVD with recommendations to solve the problems
If you are building an extension to your house, you should seriously consider having an underground CCTV survey as part of a build over survey. Avoiding this relatively small expense can cost you a lot of money and mess in the long term. Can you imaging the mess of having to dig up a floor in your house if there is a problem. Avoid this by having a build over survey in the first place
