The link between overeating and emotions is quite thoroughly accepted in the industry. But the exact definition of overeating patterns as well as the precise cause and effect that determines the cycle and spread of obesity not only for unique individuals, but for family units and social groups is difficult to define.
The basic concept is well known and well used: comfort food. Comfort foods are those items that people reach for in reaction to unpleasant emotions. So the cause of this particular moment of time of eating is emotional. Fear, anger, depression and anxiety are some of the main negative emotions that lead people to eat for comfort. Temporary and/or chronic overeating provides people with a feeling of relief from those negative feelings that are afflicting them. Food provides a temporary relief from the overeater’s emotional pain.
Positive feelings can be obtained from eating/overeating. The act of eating and/or the preparation of foods provides a distraction from the negative emotions. And the act of eating is often viewed as a reward providing gratification to the overeater. It also can provide general comfort related to the familiarity of the foods at hand.
Individuals who suspect that they may fall into the category of “overeater” may start with one simple step towards defeating the problem. It’s easy. Define what the problem is. Ask the difficult question. Are you an overeater? Keep an eating diary. This will help you pinpoint exactly what it is you are eating. It will also help you define patterns that could indicate a problem. Why are you overeating? When are you overeating? Were you hungry?
And if you were eating and you weren’t hungry…why? Was it in response to a certain situation? Was it in response to a certain individual? Was it at a certain place or time of day? If you are able to define your overeating cycle it’s that much easier to break it before your overeating problem escalates into a full blown health issue. Overeating often leads to obesity eventually and obesity comes hand in hand with a drastic increase in the risks for many common illnesses and diseases.
Defining the problem, the habits and the cycle makes stopping it much easier. Individuals are able to stop the negative cycle created by emotions and overeating and get control of their weight. And once the cycle is broken they can focus on losing the weight they’ve already gained. There are all natural methods recently made available that offer drastic, rapid weight loss for those who are able to dedicate themselves to following the homeopathic HCG diet protocol.
Amelia Handley studied exercise science in college with a minor in Nutrition. Yet she still found herself veering from diet to diet in order to control her weight. With HCG Diet Direct she’s found a program that allows her to combine her desire to control her own body weight with her education and not feel off balance.
